The Garden of Eden on the Earth
糯黑村是人间爱情伊甸园，
Nuohei Village is the site of free love.
这里的彝族撒尼人主张婚姻自由民主，
Yi and Sani people here advocate freedom and democracy of marriage,
父母为年满18岁姑娘，
For daughters aged 18, parents will
在自家大门外另盖一间小草楼。
Build another grass house outside of the gate.
夜晚年满20岁的男青年，
At night, young men aged over 20，
爬上心爱姑娘的草楼谈情说爱。
Will go to the grass building to see their sweethearts.
弹起大三弦、月琴，一起对歌，
They play Big Sanxian and moon lute
(a four-stringed plucked instrument with a full-moon-shaped sound box )
and sing songs together,

岁月故事里的石头城
The Long-Lasting Stone City
在彝语中，“糯”意为“猿猴”，
“黑”意为“水塘”，
In the Yi language, “Nuo” means “apes and monkeys”,
and “Hei” means “pond”.
“糯黑”则是“猿猴嬉戏的水塘”。
“Nuohei” means the “pond where apes and monkeys are playing”.
不知道名字中的水塘是不是村口的那方，
I have no idea if the water pond in the name
is the place in the village entrance,
或许这些都不是那么重要，
Or this is not that important.
因为进村的瞬间，
Because at the first sight of the village,
那一栋栋石头房子定会吸引所有人的注意力。
You will be attracted by the stone houses.
村民世世代代以山上的层石搭建房屋，
Villagers have always used stone to
build their houses for generations,
错落有致地镶嵌在这山水之间，
Houses are located in the mountains and near waters,
环抱着寨子中间的一汪静静的湖水。
And houses are surrounded around
the quiet lake in the middle.
依山傍水，炊烟袅袅，欢歌笑语，
The beautiful landscape,
smoke curling up from kitchen chimneys,
songs and laughter,
构成了一幅人与自然相融，
Compose a picture displaying the harmony

这些青石层层叠叠地垒在一起，

石头堆砌的房子，石板铺盖的屋顶，
The houses piled by stone, the roof made of stone plates,
石头垒成的院落，
and the courtyards built by stone,
颜色深深浅浅，朴素而沧桑，
Have dark and light colors, plain or full of vicissitudes,
记录着撒尼人世代生活岁月的痕迹。
And record details of the life lived by
generations of Sani people .
密枝节男人专属的“约会”节
Mizhi Festival-“Dating” Festival
Exclusively for Men
密枝节是糯黑村盛大的节日，
Mizhi Festival is a grand festival for Nuohei Village,
毕摩带领村里的男人们到密枝林祭祀神灵，
Bimo leads men of the village to
offer sacrifice to gods in Mizhi forests,
祈祷人兽兴旺、五谷丰登。
To pray for flourishing and harvesting.
密枝林是神圣不可侵犯的圣地，
Mizhi Forest is a sacred and holy land,
也是当地人的图腾崇拜。
And the totem worship of local people.
关于密枝节有太多的传说，
There are numerous legends about Mizhi Festival,
我更愿意相信密枝神叫“密枝斯玛”，
But I’m more convinced that Mizhi God is “Mizhi Sima”,
是一位聪明美丽的姑娘。
Who is a smart and beautiful girl.
一日天空突降大冰雹，
One day, when it hails suddenly,
她将村子里的牛羊赶进密林，
She drives the cattle and sheep
of the village into thick forests,
为撒尼人留下了牛羊。
And protects them for Sani people.
后来人们用猪、羊、鸡祭奠，
Later, people use white pigs、
sheep and chicken to offer sacrifice,
以感谢守护村寨的密枝斯玛和密林。
To show appreciation for Mizhi Sima
and the thick forest that protects the village.
汉人贵茶，彝人贵酒
People of Han Nationality value Tea,
and people of Yi Ethnic Group value alcohol
撒尼人是大块吃肉、大碗喝酒的豪爽民族。
Sani people are straightforward and bold,
as they have meat in large pieces and alcohol in large bowls.
村子里家家户户都会酿酒，
Every family in the village will be brewing,
用自家种的玉米酿成温醇的酒。
use the corn planted by themselves to brew mild alcohol.
每当来客人时，就搬出自家的酒，
Whenever having guests, they will put their alcohol,
阿黑哥阿诗玛用洪亮的、温婉的声音，
In loud and gentle voice, men and women
唱起敬酒歌欢迎远道而来的客人。
Will sing the toasting song to greet guests from afar.
彝族人能歌善舞，善用各种乐器，

Yi people return home joyfully at sunset,
