SHOPPERS will spend record sums online in the next few weeks—in China for Singles Day on November 11th, in America on Black Friday and around the world in the run-up to Christmas.
Set a record, push sth. To a new high, Reach a new high, hit a record, break a record
Now that the average price of a gallon of gasoline has hit a record above $4 a gallon, expectations could climb further.
Moscow hit a record summer temperature of 38.2 degrees Celsius (101 degrees Fahrenheit) on Thursday.
Singles’Day falls on November 11th in China.
或者日期is/marks/is known as 节日;
或者用节日做主语,被动态,比如节日is celebrated/observed on 日期。
If you observe an important day such as a holiday or anniversary, you do something special in order to honour or celebrate it.
...where he will observe Thanksgiving with family members.…
May Day, Mother's Day, Children's Day, Father's Day, National Day, Easter, Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving Day; The Spring Festival春节, The Dragon Boat Festival端午节, The Mid-autumn Festival中秋节。
Nowhere does debate rage more fiercely about what this means than in America, where thousands of stores have shut this year and where retailing accounts for one in nine jobs.
Sth is hotly debated; Sth is a hot/heated issue, there is a hot/heated debate about...there is a buzz about...
Amazon’s challengers should learn from China, where Alibaba’s rivals are teaming up.
if a group of people huddle together, they stay very close to each other, especially because they are cold or frightened〔尤因寒冷或恐惧而〕(使)挤作一团,(使)聚成一堆
We lay huddled together for warmth.
It now has a thriving digital-payments business and is the biggest shareholder in JD.com, Alibaba’s closest e-commerce competitor.
还有一个小词很容易被忽略,a flowering of,formal when something develops in a very successful way某事物的顶峰时期[繁荣时期]。
The 19th century saw a flowering of science and technology. 19
当然,这个flower本身也有动词性: to develop in a very successful way繁荣,兴旺
the economic and social conditions that will allow democracy to flower将促进民主繁荣的经济和社会环境
