根据连词在句中所起的作用，连词可以分为并列连词（用以连接并列的单词、短语或句子的连词）和从属连词（用以引导从句的连词）。并列连词可用于表示并列关系、转折关系、选择关系和因果关系。表示并列关系的并列连词用法如下：
1.and连接两个或两个以上的单词、短语或句子，表示对等关系时，通常意为“和”; and连接并列的句子时，可表顺承关系，意为“而; 然后; 因此”，也可不译；例如：
- He continued to make great achievements in physics and mathematics. 他继续在物理和数学领域取得巨大成就。
- Reading is a give and take between author and reader. 阅读是作者和读者之间的一种给予与索取。
- People who have heard about him send him gloves, and he has many in his apartment. 听说过他的人都会给他寄手套，(因此)他的公寓里已经有很多副手套了。
注意事项
①一般来说，and连接两个并列成分作主语时，如果表示复数含义，则谓语动词用复数形式。例如:
- His fame and wealth were gained through hard work and his in-depth knowledge of his business. 他的名声和财富是通过努力工作和他对业务的深入了解而获得的。
- Well before classes start, students and teachers order Lattes,Cappuccinos and Hot Chocolates. 上课前，学生和老师会点拿铁、卡布奇诺和热巧克力。
②and连接三个或三个以上对象时，通常在前面的对象之间用逗号，最后两个对象之间用and连接。例如：
- He enjoys listening to violin music, playing mah-jong, swimming and reading. 他喜欢听小提琴曲、打麻将、游泳和阅读。
- Reading, writing and speaking are also very important to the job. 阅读、写作和口语对这项工作也很重要。
③“祈使句+and+陈述句”句型可以转换为含if引导的条件状语从句的复合句，须注意，转换后 and 无须保留。例如:
- Follow the arrows on the map and you will be able to find the subway station for yourself. = If you follow the arrows on the map, you will be able to find the subway station for yourself顺着地图上的箭头走，你就可以自己找到地铁站了。
2.both…and...连接两个并列成分，表肯定，意为“两者都”；both...and... 连接两个并列成分作主语时，谓语动词用复数形式。例如：
- Both men and women tend to focus on rewards and less on consequences under stress. 在压力之下，男性和女性都更倾向于关注回报而非结果。
- Both the hand movements and the very idea of communicating without speaking attracted me. 手势和无声交流的想法吸引了我。
- Both China and Canada have mountains in the west of the country. 中国西部和加拿大西部都有山脉。
