There is a school of thought that supposes the main factor in environmental conservation is for people alive today to sacrifice their comfort in order that those in the future benefit, a view I believe to be misguided for the following reasons.
One of the main arguments made for supporting the notion that today’s generation need to live in less comfort in order to safeguard future generations is based on the idea that it is the regular citizenry who are responsible for today’s environmental challenges. This belief, however, is erroneous, as it is not the common folk who purposefully pollute the atmosphere, soil, and waterways, but rather, it is companies and corporations that are responsible for the bulk of all polluting materials that enter the eco-system. Even the indirect polluting of the environment done by citizens can be traced back to corporate indifference and negligence.
The key ingredient, subsequently, in protecting future generations from a degraded environment is for business, particularly corporations, to ensure that manufacturing operations produce as little waste as possible. An example that illustrates the basis for this argument is that of packaging. It is easy to blame the consumer for the excessive amounts of plastic and cardboard that are used for a product’s package, but it is business that actually promotes its use, and usually for the sake of marketing. Conversely, the consumer is only interested in the actual product, and in fact, in today’s environmentally aware society, it is they who are most concerned with this lack of environmentally-friendly packaging.
In conclusion, though consumers and citizens have some responsibility and duty to protect the environment, I believe the most vital element to a successful solution in creating a cleaner future for the next generation is for the business world to fundamentally change its process of manufacturing, and not, instead, to penalize the populace by reducing their standard of living.
