一般认为，“有生之年”一词出自清代李汝珍所著《镜花缘》第68回：“俾臣得保蚁命，此后有生之年，莫非主上所赐，惟求格外垂怜。”指一生之中最后的年月，即余年。

动漫界是有生之年系列的重灾区。一部动漫作品被归入“有生之年系列”大致源于两个原因，一个是由于动漫作者的匠（quan）心（qian）精神，完全不想让动漫有完结的意思，情节被一再延长，虽然故事有明确的主线，但剧情却始终在走支线。比如已经更新至900多集的某死亡小学生系列动漫。（什么？我都上大学了这货居然还是个小学生？）
