《月令七十二候解集》:处，停。
暑气至此而止矣。处暑（End of Heat）是反映气温变化的一个节气，农历24节气中第14个节气。“处”含有躲藏、终止意思，“处暑”表示炎热暑天即将结束。一般来说，处暑之后，各地平均气温会比立秋节气时下降1℃左右。暑气渐去，凉意渐生，是进入处暑后的天气。

处暑三候
一候鹰乃祭鸟
二候天地始肃
三候禾乃登
“一候鹰乃祭鸟”是指此节气中老鹰开始大量捕猎鸟类，并且先陈列如祭而后食。
“二候天地始肃”是指接着天地间万物开始凋零，充满了肃杀之气。
“三候禾乃登”是指谷物成熟，开始秋收。

处暑风俗
开渔节
对于沿海渔民来说，处暑以后是渔业收获的时节。每年处暑期间，浙江省沿海都要举行的隆重的开渔节，欢送渔民开船出海。
这时海域水温依然偏高，鱼群还是会停留在海域周围，鱼虾贝类发育成熟。因此，从这一时间开始，人们往往可以享受到种类繁多的海鲜。

处暑之后，秋意渐浓，正是人们畅游郊野迎秋赏景的好时节。处暑过，暑气止，就连天上的那些云彩也显得疏散而自如，而不像夏天大暑之时浓云成块。民间向来就有“七月八月看巧云”之说，其间就有“出游迎秋”之意。

“处暑”期间，气侯逐渐干燥，要多吃些滋阴润燥的食物，少摄取辛辣、多增加碱性食物，以加强肝脏功能。
处暑之后，秋意渐浓，正是人们畅游郊野迎秋赏景的好时节。秋天，秋高气爽，适合户外运动。可根据个人的体质，做一些登山、慢跑、郊游等户外运动。
另外还要根据天气变化增添衣物，晚上睡觉也要注意复盖腹部。
