About the Author 1

Jane Austen was born into a Moderately wealthy family in 1775, during the reign of King George Ⅲ. Her family was typically large as was customary at the time in order to counter the possibility of early death by producing many offspring. She had five older brothers, one older sister and a younger brother.


1. moderate 1278 : You use moderate to describe something that is neither large nor small in amount or degree. 适中的;适量的;适度的

Ex- 适度的压力是有好处的,但压力太大会把人压垮。

While a moderate amount of stress can be beneficial, too much stress can exhaust you.

Ex- ... 适度的锻炼 ... moderate exercise

Ex- 两种昆虫都是中等大小。 Both are moderately large insects.

Ex- 我不吸烟,喝酒也是适可而止。 I don’t smoke and I drink only moderately.


adj. 2 : A moderate change in something is a change that is not great. (变化)不大的,有限的

Ex- 大多数药物要么不能使病情真正好转,要么最多只能带来轻微的改善。

Most drugs offer either no real improvement or, at best, only moderate improvements.

Ex- 东京股票交易所股价小幅下跌。

Share prices on the Tokyo Exchange declined moderately.


adj. 3 : Moderate political opinions or policies are not extreme.

Ex- 他的观点非常温和,很容易相处。 He is an easygoing man of very moderate views.

Ex- 两国都呼吁慎用武力。 Both countries have called for a moderate approach to the use of force.


verb. : If you moderate something or if it moderates, it becomes less extreme or violent and easier to deal with or accept. 缓和;减轻

2. reign 1668 : When a king or queen reigns, he or she rules a country. 统治,治理 vi.

Ex- 亨利二世,1154至1189年间在位。 ... HenryⅡ, who reigned from 1154 to 1189.

Ex- 乔治三世,英国在位时间最长的君主之一 ... GeorgeⅢ, one of Britain’s longest reigning monarchs.


verb. 2 : If you say that a person reigns in a situation or area, you mean that they are very powerful or successful. 称王;支配;主宰

Ex- 可可香奈儿在半个世纪里一直主宰着时尚界。 Coco Chanel reigned over fashion for half a century.


3. counter 444 : If you do something to counter a particular action or process, you do something which has an opposite effect to it or makes it less effective. 抵制;抵消

Ex- 领导层讨论了计划采取的经济措施,以减轻这一封锁带来的影响。

The leadership discussed a plan of economic measures to counter the effects of such a blockade.


verb. 2 : If you counter something that someone has said, you say something which shows that you disagree with them or which proves that they are wrong. 反驳;驳斥

Ex- 他们两个人都不得不对尖锐的批评进行反击。 Both of them had to counter fierce criticism.

n.2:Something that is a counter to something else has an opposite effect to it or makes it less effective. 对立面;相对事物

Ex- ... NATO’s traditional role as a counter to the military might of the Warsaw pact. 军事力量 , 公约
